The holiday season is here again — the rush to find the Wii, an Iphone, an American Doll no one else has. It’s so very easy to get caught up in things, in the idea that an expensive gift is all that matters to a child.
It’s not. What matters most are the small, daily things we usually ignore — the smell of strawberries on your child’s cheek, the way she gathers leaves in the yard on every crisp fall day, your son’s fascination with all things pirates, all things spacemen and all things bugs. What matters most to them is your time. Time spent just being because these moments are as fleeting and ephemeral as a snowflake on your tongue and in a week, a month, a year she will prefer lipstick over leaves and that sweet smell will be perfume, not strawberries.
With that, I bring you Grace – my Dec/January recipient of my Moments of Grace program: Grace. Even her name was perfect. Grace has cystic fibrosis and stole my heart from the moment we met when she grabbed my hand and led me along in search of adventure. And adventure we had (just ask mom who almost had a heart attack). The Plaza hotel, Central Park, Henri Bendel’s and Rockefeller Center were just some of the places we stopped. By the end of the day I was so exhausted I could barely keep my eyes open but I think it was worth it and I hope you think so too.

My son was in Grace’s pre-school class last year. She is so full of life, and you have captured her beautifully in such a wonderful setting. Thanks for sharing.
